The Role of ecological surveys in effective habitat management

Ecological surveys are important for a number of reasons. To identify what habitats and species are present. In order to manage a habitat or species appropriately you need to understand what is present so you can target suitable management. Additionally, surveys can also identify the condition of a habitat or extent of species population, which can be used to inform potential management changes.

Surveys can be particularly important at the beginning of a project, to provide a baseline from which repeated surveys can be used to monitor change and in turn inform any required changes in management to improve species and habitat condition.

How we can help

We have wide ranging skills across a range of habitats and species and standardised survey methods including:

Species:

  • Birds surveys including Breeding Bird Surveys

  • Botanical surveys including condition assessments

  • Bats

  • Newts

  • Butterfly surveys

  • Invertebrates.

Habitats:

  • Lowland woodlands and scrub

  • Trees

  • Grasslands including neutral and calcareous grasslands

  • Arable land

  • Hedgerows
